These are NOT five design trends
The industry magazine ‘Hotel & Konference’ asked us which trends we would recommend, for an article in their May issue about spatial design trends. We sent them 5 suggestions but chose to ‘cheat’ a tiny little bit. So - our 5 recommendations are actually not 5 fleeting trends, but rather 5 perennial recommendations for creating spaces that always appeal to human beings. They are:
1. Create authentic spaces. Perfection can feel impersonal and sometimes even superficial, so don’t be afraid of diversity and ‘imperfection’ (If you do it right, that is. Messy and indifferent is not the solution!) Use natural, authentic materials and integrate elements that add a personal and local feel.
2. Use wood. Wood regulates the indoor climate and reduces cortisol levels - and thereby stress. Wood is just really good for our health.
3. Make something special. This recommendation is basically to NOT be trendy. Don’t be too hung up on what others do. Create spaces that tell your, your brand's or your organization’s story. Not everyone else’s. Create something unique, special and personal.
4. Have focus on acoustics. Noise is bad for our health – really bad actually. So have focus on acoustics and create spaces that are calm and quiet.
5. And last but no least: create spaces that exude optimism. There is so much to worry about in the world, but people need to feel hope and optimism to function. So, create spaces that make people smile.
